The “Space Measurement Control Communication Technology Joint Lab” co-constructed by the Beijing Research Institute of Telemetry (BRIT) and Xidian University has invited Luciano Iess for academic exchange in Beijing on June 11, 2014. Luciano Iess is a full professor from the school of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Sapienza University of Rome. Prof. Iess has given two wonderful lectures on topics of “Trends and Goals in Deep Space Navigation Systems”, and “Trends and Opportunities in Radio Science: The Scientific Use of Deep Space Tracking Systems”. Distinguished guests of this activity includes: Ms. Li Yanhua, the head of BRIT, Mr. Lu Manhong, the chief engineer of BRIT, and Associate Prof. Fang Haiyan from the school of space science and technologies of Xidian Univeristy.

The two lectures have discussed in detail the latest trend and the development goals of the deep space navigation system. The lectures focused on introducing the novel communication methods and high precision navigation technologies. These state-of-the-art technologies have already applied to the cassini probe which are used by NASA, ESA, and ASI to carry out the mission to explore the planet. The lectures have also attempted to discuss the trends and challenges emerging in the development of wireless science. During the talks, Prof. Iess has introduced the application scenarios of Ka-band wireless link in the NASA exploration of Jupiter, and the ESA BepiColombo explorer. Finally, Iess summarized his talk by introducing the research achievements of his research team.

Audiences of this lecture were highly interested in the novel ideas and the research direction of Prof. Iess. Students asked quite a lot of questions and discussed interactively with the professor. Finally, the lecture ended in the friendly and warm atmosphere. The picture below shows the pose for a group photo of this activity.

This lecture has enhanced the academic exchanges of the Joint Lab and international renowned universities. It also plays a very important role in expanding our research directions. In addition, the two peers have agreed in taking a further step in research cooperation and talent cultivation. Specific and effective measures are proposed during the talks.
